Peter Tatchell Will Be At This Year’s Fringe Festival Speaking on “The Unfinished Battle For LGBT Human Rights”, October 3rd, at 6.30pm (Venue to be confirmed)
A message from Peter Tatchell
LGBT human rights campaigner
“I am proud to support Derby’s Rainbow Fringe Festival 2010. I’ll be there and I hope you will join me. Celebrate your sexuality and the rights we have won. But also remember that the battle for LGBT equality is not yet over.
2010 is the fortieth anniversary of the formation of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) in Britain. With its revolutionary slogan, ‘Gay is Good,’ GLF turned the homophobia of centuries on its head and
motivated thousands of LGBT people to come out for the first time.
Defiant and proud, GLF ended the victim mentality and challenged the values, laws and institutions of heterosexist society. It initiated the idea of Gay Pride and coordinated the UK’s first Gay Pride march, which was held in London in July 1972.
Since the 1970s, the LGBT community has made great strides towards equality, but we have not yet won equal treatment.
There is still a ban on same-sex marriage. Civil partnerships are not equality. They are a form of sexual apartheid, with different laws for gay and straight people. I am against the ban on same-sex couples getting married and I am equally opposed to the way heterosexual couples are barred from having a civil partnership. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Gay and bisexual men are prohibited from donating blood, even if they always practice safe sex and have tested HIV-negative.
Successive Home Secretaries have given visas and work permits to reggae singers who incite the murder of gay people, despite such incitements being serious criminal offences.
The government’s many commendable LGBT law reforms are no excuse for its stonewalling on the abolition of these remaining aspects of homophobic discrimination.
“We won’t stop campaigning until we win full respect, acceptance, dignity and human rights”

Derbyshire Rainbow Fringe Festival Organised Events For LGBT History Month, February
BACKGROUND
The first celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month in the UK was organised in February 2005 by Schools Out (formerly the Gay Teachers’ Group, who advocates for LGBT equality in education (see www.schools-out.org.uk). “The event came in the wake of the abolition of Section 28 and is intended to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against, an otherwise substantially invisible minority” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_History_Month). Since 2005 the event has grown from strength to strength, witnessing major developments including the launch of LGBT history websites in England, Scotland and Wales and the archiving, protecting and celebration of LGBT contributions to history. History Month has also been a catalyst for the development of many localised history projects, such as, Our Story Scotland, the Nottinghamshire Rainbow Heritage Project and the embryonic DRFF organised Derbyshire Routes of the Rainbow Tree heritage project. February 2010 marks initial steps to archive, showcase and celebrate the contribution of LGBT people and organisations to the heritage of Derbyshire and beyond. The recognition and celebration of LGBT History Month challenges ignorance and prejudice which hopefully leads to a more inclusive society. We hope you come and celebrate with us.

January 27th, 2010 is Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day – marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this day, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is challenging everyone across the UK to become part of a Legacy of Hope. HMD 2010 offers an opportunity to listen to the voices from the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and to make the lessons of hope for a safer, inclusive society where the differences between us are respected a reality today and in the future.(source:http://www.hmd.org.uk/resources/theme-papers/hmd-2010-the-legacy-of-hope). To paraphrase Ghandi, be the change you wish to see in the world, say no to hatred, say yes to human rights for all, why not start by visiting http://www.hmd.org.uk and lighting the candle of hope.

Literature: Poetry, Non-fiction, Song Writing,
Traditional Art/Craft: Storytelling
She lives and works in Western North Carolina, United States.
In describing her work she writes, “The intuitive comes easy to me in music, poetry, reflective writing and music composition. In mid-life I’m learning to see with a different eye, my real ones! As a lover of meditation I also am finding photography a great and new way to focus, center and quiet…In my art, music and stories I seek to convey the beauty I see, hear and feel in the live around us. We are surrounded by the spirit of nature, the soul of sound and the dance of vision. The goal of art is to move us; move us to look inward or reach outward or stop and be still. All we have is here and now and this life before us, over our heads, under our feet, residing in our center is good. My art is an attempt to share this with others while at the same time loving life again and again”. Source: http://www.redbubble.com/people/jrobinwhitley

61st International Human Rights Day, December 10th 2009!
Human Rights Day;Some Big Issues
Homophobic Hate Crime Is A Human Rights Issue
Please note that DRFF do not necessarily agree with the protrayal of the Uk Police Service as inherently Homophobic, but we do support the message that Homophobic Hate Crime is a Human Rights issue and the use of statistical evidence to highlight the issue of Homophobic Hate Crime in The UK
The Gay Holocaust

December 1, 2009 WORLD AIDS DAY IS 21!
It is hard to believe that 21 years on the war on HIV/AIDS rages on. In the Global North we have come some way towards addressing the stigma, exclusion and inevitable death sentence that went hand in hand with a diagnosis. Unfortunately, elsewhere in the world it is not quite the case, with whole societies being ravaged as much by HIV/AIDS as they are by the ignorance and inhumanity of their governments, international pharmaceutical companies and sadly at times their communities. Indeed, even in the West many continue to suffer as much from the impact of HIV/AIDS as they do from the economic, socio-political stigma (for instance, gay men in Britain are still barred from being blood donors) and access to equitable medical treatment. Many have lost that fight but it is in their name that we all must carry on. The need to change the current perception, treatment and care of people who are living with HIV/AIDS remains at the pinnacle of the world health agenda. As the Country engages in its annual flurry of vigils, memorials, fund and awareness raising activity, let us not forget that there are another 364 days in the year. Let us all through individual and collective action, not just today but whenever we can, do something to help make a difference!

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is set aside to remember those who have been killed due to Transphobia. The event was originally held in November to honour Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 was a catalyst for creating the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a candleligt vigil in San Francisco in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world, including London, Birmingham Manchester and of course, Derby.
