Human Rights & Wrongs
Background
Organised human rights activism is fairly new, even in the West. Indeed, it wasn’t until after the end of World War II, in the wake of the atrocities visited upon Jews, Romany People, ‘dissidents’/communists, those considered to be sub-human due to mental and physical disabilities and of course ‘homosexuals’ (largely men), that the then powers that be, came together declaring yet again, ‘Never Again’! Post World War I, ‘Never Again’ had been uttered with regard to Total War. This time however, ‘The Never Again’ was followed by the reforming of the then League Of Nations into The United Nations and the emergence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, 1948.
In 2008 the Declaration celebrated its 60 year anniversary, and although in the West some leaps and bounds have been made with regard to human rights, other parts of the world have not fared so well. Indeed, even in the West, human rights abuses continue to be an issue, poverty, people trafficking and the ongoing denial of full human rights to LGBT people continue to give cause for concern and activism.
Since 1948 several other key pieces of human rights legislation have also been passed and a concerted effort has also been made by, Amnesty International, International Human Rights Watch and The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, amongst others, who have added their weight to fighting for all kinds of rights.
This section of the site deals with human rights at the national, regional and international levels. We start the debate with video footage on LGBT issues in the ‘Current Debates and News’ pages and move on to set the scene by going back to the very beginning with the Declaration itself and as you read on in subsequent pages outline all major human rights developments, narrowing to focus again on legislation and changes affecting the LGBT community in particular. Our aim here is to raise awareness, not least because these rights belong, to you, to all of us. We hope that by familiarising everyone who visits these pages with all aspects of human rights, it will help to increase the appreciation, promotion and perhaps most importantly the defence of this cornerstone of human existence.
